INSIDIOUS THREAT TO SENSE OF FATHERHOOD—Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger Warns against Dangers of Biotechnology

On a planet crammed with ever-increasing news of a volatile nature,which is the noise made when titanic ships meet unexpected icebergs, orthe cacophony generated by an entire civilization wired for sound,observing and analyzing itself as it warps into unintelligible shapes,I hesitate as never before to add my own little bit of news.
Those of you who have read my novels, or my articles on globalization, know that I believe that the radical model of “world governance” currently being promoted by the United Nations Organization and by other organizations will be a new form of totalitarianism, if it is ever fully realized. It’s my conviction that the globalism of the new world order will not bring order but instead will bring a semblance of order through total control over all sectors of private and public life. It will, in the process, infest life in the human community on this planet with all manner of disorders and anti-human dimensions. That kind of globalism embodies within its core presumptions certain errors about the meaning of the human person, and the human community. In a sense it represents the worst kind of ultra-nationalism, but inflated to the planetary scale, lacking the lavish diversity provided by numerous different cultures and nations states–a diversity that is essential for any human civilization.
In the entire history of mankind, the world has never been so flooded in light as it is now. It is an artificial light, however, and could be extinguished instantly by an earthquake, a bomb, or a raccoon creeping by mistake into a power station and electrocuting itself (as once happened in our area). Physical light is an energy which radiates into the darkness of the universe. Physical darkness is not a counterforce, but merely the absence of light. When we use the imperfect metaphors of light and darkness to visualize the great spiritual war in the heavens, it is sometimes forgotten that evil is not a mere absence of the Light. Neither is it a substance like poisonous gas. It is primarily a perversion of something that was originally created good.
Every year on this feast-day I ask myself if the blood of our children would have flowed with the blood of the holy innocents. Would their last little screams echo in our ears forever? Would my own voice and the voice of my wife have been mingled with the cries of the grieving parents of Bethlehem? Would a voice be heard in the suburbs and the shopping malls, sobbing and loudly lamenting –– our own cry, disconnected, weeping for our children because they are no more? And when the soldiers wipe their swords and go home and the rulers go back to their affairs of state, and when in the world of commerce it is business as usual, would we just stand there with holes in our hearts, bleeding from an incurable wound?
On August 2nd a tornado hit Combermere, Ontario, the town where I live. Actually it is now estimated that three touched down, and two of them met in our village and worked mayhem. Such a natural disaster is an almost unthinkable event for us. We hear about Asian tsunamis, the hurricane in New Orleans, earthquakes here and there throughout the world, and we feel sympathy and send relief. But they remain somewhat abstract for us, because the worst that we suffer is a few power blackouts a year when spring and autumn storms blow a tree across a power line, or when a winter blizzard makes the roads difficult to drive for a day or so. We grumble and complain and then stop ourselves and thank God for a fairly clement climate in which to live. But actual disasters! Never! It could never happen to us!
The new globalists’ model of what is now called universal “governance” is in fact a colossal form of collectivism. As all ideologues do, they offer us superficial either/or choices. They do not understand that globalism will not change the fundamental human condition. World-shapers (rather, world-reshapers) are long familiar to those who have lived through radical political experiments, and we would do well to listen carefully to what the survivors have to tell us. Their experience is a crucial part of “the basic memory of mankind.” And they are consistent in their warnings that beneath the experimenters’ mental constructs, and even beneath their supposed humanitarianism, you will always find a killer. It is a fact that in the 20th century alone 170 million people were murdered by their own governments (this figure does not include human lives terminated through abortion and euthanasia). It is a fact that the majority of the murderous states were impelled by idealistic visions for solving the problem of man. Regardless of whether a killer is brutal and repulsive or whether he is altruistic and attractive (as he speaks in reasonable tones about the lives that must be subtracted from the human community), he is a killer. Presumption and arrogance over mankind always bring forth, in time, the fruit of death.
“Curiositas” is an inordinate desire to know, to see, to experience what is not rightly within one’s legitimate needs or within the proper boundaries of one’s vocation. Which brings to mind the power of the internet’s practically infinite (and practically instantaneous) capacity to fill the appetite of curiositas. The internet is a tool made by and used by human beings, and it is one of the most powerful ever invented. Though the analogy is imperfect, we might say that it is similar to atomic power. Morally neutral, it can light up homes or make apocalyptic landscapes. So too, the net can illumine minds or it can darken them even as it bestows with extraordinary force the sensations of light. Atomic fusion(fission) must be contained, which is another way of saying it must function in its right place, in proper proportion if it is to assist creation and not unleash destruction. So, too, the net. But how?

The veneer of democratic process has grown so thin as to become a form of sinister theater, as if we were acting out time-honored scripts from Greek tragedies that each generation of actors memorizes and mouths but fails to understand. As Aristotle predicted inPolitics (his classic work on government), democracies degenerate into oligarchies, and oligarchies into tyrannies. In my country we are now experiencing incremental stages of this process—”democracy” manipulated to undermine democracy. The “same-sex marriage” law and its companion piece, the new “hate crime” law, are only the latest components in a much larger and ongoing project, which is the total re-engineering of society. When the moral foundation of a nation crumbles, anything then becomes possible.
Of the myriad phenomenal gifts which God gave (and will continue to give) to the Church and the world through John Paul II, one in particular stands out for me as especially significant for our times. He was a living icon of holy fatherhood. In this great apostle, priest, teacher, and chief shepherd of the flock of the Lord, we experienced an image of Christ’s love, and of God the Father as revealed in Christ Jesus. John Paul II embodied all that was best in human nature, irradiated with grace. An ardent priest, a philosopher, an artist, a sportsman, a man of sacrifice, a man of tender heart and nerves of steel, of wit and laughter and tears, he expressed the essential nature of what it is to be a fully-alive Christian—to be a person in whom Truth and Love are integrated. His qualities seem inexhaustible, his sanctity unquestionable, the legacy of his pontificate so rich that it will be centuries before we absorb it completely, if we ever do. The effects of this extraordinary generosity on the part of Heaven have already begun, yet there is more to come, perhaps centuries more, during which the light he brought to us “from above” will increase and not fade in memory.
